Course overview

We all have biases that influence our decision-making. Relying on them is normal and part of a natural survival mechanism. However, problems can arise when our biases are based on inaccurate or unfair assumptions – this can lead to decisions that disadvantage or exclude other people.

This module provides practical frameworks for how to recognise and challenge our unconscious biases with the aim of helping to prevent their potentially harmful impacts and promote fair and equitable decision-making at work.

Learning outcomes

  • Recognise the influence of unconscious bias, stereotyping and prejudice on our behaviour
  • Identify common unconscious biases that can result in harmful decision-making
  • Identify the link between bias and the neuroscience of the brain (how biases are formed)
  • Apply a framework to challenge biased thinking and behaviours
  • Apply practical strategies to reduce the impact of bias and build a more inclusive and productive work environment

Compliance outcomes

  • Foster a workplace culture rooted in fairness, equality, and inclusivity
  • Equip employees with the knowledge and tools to recognise and challenge unconscious biases
  • Effectively address compliance obligations under anti-discrimination and equal opportunity legislation
  • Prevent discrimination, fostering a positive work environment, and safeguarding the organisation's reputation.
  • Contribute to a workplace where all employees feel valued and respected, regardless of their background or identity.

I have been designing and conducting training in risk and compliance for 20+ years and I just wanted to share that the Enmasse training was some of the best online training I’ve ever done. When you see something that is human centred, personable, effective, digestible and easy to use, it’s rare.

Rhiannon R, Melbourne

I've recently become more aware of unconscious bias and affinity bias as barriers to true inclusion. The affinity bias exercise (around people you trusted) was really valuable as it was a bit of a light bulb moment and further broadened my understanding of some of the psychological factors at play in this space.

Nathan B, Melbourne

Great presenters. Very engaging. As a female who has been engaged in this work for some time it was refreshing to see that a majority of the men in the room are now on board with this messaging.

Pam S, Melbourne

The facilitator was great – she really cared about mental health issues and it showed. The practical examples were excellent.

Judy, Melbourne

I found defining the key concepts of mental health and wellbeing, the symptoms and how to respond appropriately was excellent.

Thomas, Melbourne

The case studies were excellent, and the practical tips on how to mange certain situations.

Clare, Melbourne
