Being exposed to traumatic events is now recognised as a psychosocial hazard, therefore understanding trauma-informed approaches is now a key capability that HR practitioners need to adopt. This session covers the essentials in how to apply the principles of trauma-informed care and support in situations where team members may be struggling in relation to exposure to a traumatic event. This may range from responses to global conflicts or natural disasters through to dealing with aggressive behaviour (experienced in a face-to-face interaction or via phone call / email), seeing distressing images or reading about distressing events.
The program provides a practical framework for applying trauma-informed principles to a supportive conversation, along with an overview of the different types of trauma we might observe at work, the reasons why having a person-centred approach is key, and some insights for managing self-care in the context of vicarious and secondary trauma. We will explore and workshop some examples of trauma-related challenges and how we might provide optimal support as a leader.
This session can also be tailored for contact officers and wellbeing champions.
