In this edition of Back on track, we examine some of the key considerations when managing and supporting a team member who may be struggling with a mental health issue or illness. We discuss some of the challenges of managing different personality types, highlight three different levels of need, and suggest some comfortable, low-risk ways to plan and conduct the conversation about mental health when responding to issues, with the aid of a 5-step model. This includes tips for starting and conducting the discussion, being prepared for different reactions and appropriately maintaining confidentiality throughout.
